In partnership with the Tanzania Conservation and Community Empowerment Initiative (TACCEI)
We successfully constructed a state-of-the-art nursery, laying the foundation to empower the community to plant 50,000 shade and fruit tree seedlings native to the area. These plants will soon be raised in the nursery and planted across degraded landscapes and over 10 different local schools. This initiative targets youth, school-going children, and communities living along water sources and arid regions in northern Tanzania. Our joint efforts are poised to engage and educate a large number of students, including primary and secondary school students and the Maasai pastoral community, through comprehensive training, tree planting, and awareness-raising campaigns.
The Problem
Northern Tanzania, particularly the Simanjiro district, faces significant environmental and socio- economic challenges. The region is experiencing severe deforestation, water scarcity, and the adverse impacts of climate change, which threaten both the natural environment and the livelihoods of local communities, especially the vulnerable Maasai population.
Environmental Degradation and Climate Change:
Deforestation and environmental degradation in Simanjiro have led to the loss of biodiversity, disruption of water cycles, and increased vulnerability to climate change. These changes exacerbate the effects of global warming, making the region prone to droughts and desertification. The lack of vegetation cover not only accelerates soil erosion but also diminishes the natural resources that the communities depend on for their survival.
Impact on Education and Community Well-being:
The local communities, particularly school-going children, suffer from inadequate access to nutritious food and a lack of environmental awareness. Schools in the region lack the resources to educate students about sustainable practices and conservation. Moreover, the scarcity of shade and fruit trees in school compounds directly affects students' well-being and nutrition, impacting their ability to learn and thrive.
Urgent Need for Sustainable Solutions:
To address these pressing issues, there is an urgent need for sustainable and community-driven solutions that can simultaneously tackle environmental restoration and community empowerment. This is where the collaboration between Paint the Globe Foundation and TACCEI came into play.
What is the TACCEI?
The Tanzania Conservation and Community Empowerment Initiative (TACCEI) is a dynamic, people-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to nature conservation and community empowerment. Through engaging and impactful projects, TACCEI collaborates with local and international organizations, research institutions, and local communities to conduct vital research, combat climate change, develop comprehensive conservation plans, and implement sustainable practices. Their initiatives not only protect the environment but also support and uplift local communities.
Project Objectives
The project's overall goal is to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 and 15: Climate Action and Life on Land. Additionally, it aims to enhance the environment, manage water sources, and improve nutrition security among the Maasai vulnerable population in the Simanjiro district in northern Tanzania.
Our mission at Paint the Globe Foundation aligns perfectly with TACCEI’s goals of promoting nature conservation and enhancing community livelihoods through empowerment and community-based conservation initiatives. Together, we aim to create a positive and lasting impact on both the environment and the communities we serve.
Improve Environmental Awareness
Enhance environmental awareness and conservation among students through teacher training programs and by strengthening Environmental Conservation Clubs in schools.
Community Access to Tree Seedlings
Ensure community access to tree seedlings to enable restoration activities.
Tree Planting Initiative
Plant over 50,000 tree seedlings in a year to combat climate change at a local level.
Nutrition Improvement
Improve students' nutrition by planting fruit trees around school compounds.
Key Project Components
State-of-the-Art Nursery Construction:
A major component of this project was the construction of a state-of-the-art nursery. This facility, measuring approximately 20x10 meters, was built in just a few weeks. The construction involved local labor and sustainable building practices, ensuring the community's involvement and investment in the project. This nursery is set to house over 50,000 native shade and fruit tree seedlings, which will be planted across degraded landscapes and distributed to 10 schools, providing both food and shade.
Tree Planting:
Utilizing the seedlings grown in our state-of-the-art nursery, we began the process of restoring degraded landscapes and enhancing the local environment.
Environmental Education:
We conducted training sessions and awareness campaigns to educate the community about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
Community Engagement:
We involved local communities, especially the youth and school children, in hands-on activities to instill a sense of responsibility and stewardship for their environment.
